Self Enhancement Inc - Youth Potential Realized

Self Enhancement, Inc is dedicated to helping youth realize their full potential. Working with schools, families, and community organizations, SEI provides opportunities for personal and academic success, bringing hope to individual young people and enhancing the quality of community life.

SEI was started in 1981 as a one-week summer camp for high school boys, using athletics to increase self-esteem and academic motivation. It has grown into a year-round after school program and charter middle school that reaches 2,000 students in and around Northeast Portland.

Students are selected for SEI's after school programs based on a "Barriers to Success" checklist that includes lack of family support, single-parent households, living below the poverty line, family members incarcerated or affiliated with gangs, or a history of chronic absences. 90% of SEI students experience more than one of these barriers.

SEI students have mentors who work with them in-school, after school and weekends, setting goals for academic accomplishments, personal responsibility and personal growth. They offer academic tutoring, enrichment, and life skills classes. Every student is held to very high standards and are tracked to an Individual Success Plan that sets academic, personal and relationship goals.

SEI selects students from their charter school and after school programs to attend Snow Days mountain day trips. We gave the Snowdays experience to over 100 SEI students during winter 2005.

SEI is a nationally recognized institution and we are proud to be associated with them. We expect the partnership to be an excellent match between two organizations that have very similar goals.
